CSV’s Make a Difference Day is the UK’s biggest day of volunteering, and provides opportunities for thousands of people to volunteer in activities across the country.
The Guild of Students has arranged a number of opportunities for students to volunteer in the local area around Saturday 27th October. These opportunities are ‘taster’ days for you to go along, meet the group or charity, see what they do and help them out for the group.

Birmingham FoodCycle
Sunday, October 28th, 12-4pm, Nechells Baths Birmingham
FoodCycle seeks to tackle food poverty and food waste!
They collect food 'waste' from the indoor markets and transform it into nutritious meals which are then served to the community.
They need volunteers to cook, serve, clean and eat at their community café at Nechells Baths (near Aston) from 12-4 on Sunday October 28th.

Build a garden for SSAFA Forces Help
Saturday, October 27th, 12-3pm, Selly Oak Birmingham
SSAFA Norton Homes provide short-stay accommodation that enables families to be close to their loved ones whilst they are being treated at the Royal College for Defence Medicine at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
The houses are a home from home, designed to provide a secure and peaceful location during a difficult time for the families.
Volunteers are needed to help the Community Wardens overhaul a section of their garden to make it a more pleasant space to be.

Conservation Volunteers Garden Party
Saturday, October 27th, 12-4pm, on campus, Birmingham
The student group Conservation Volunteers need some help with their student garden at the university.
This is an open event and everyone is welcome, you don’t even have to book a place. Just come along to the Student Garden by the Guild of Students at 12pm.
They have all the equipment you will need, just dress prepared to get your clothes dirty!

Conservation Volunteers Hazelwell Park Work Party
Saturday, October 27th, meet at the Guild of Students at 10am
The student group Conservation Volunteers are off to Hazelwell Park to do some practical conservation volunteering.
This event will get you in the outdoors and helping keep beautiful spaces beautiful.
All you need is some sturdy clothes that can get muddy and your bus fare, they will provide the rest – they will even lend you some wellies if you don’t have sturdy boots.

Time to Change
Friday, October 26th, Cathedral Square Birmingham
Time to Change is a collaborative project between the charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness. The project aims to break down the stigma surrounding Mental Health by encouraging people to talk about it.
On Friday 26th October Time to Change is setting up a Change Village in Cathedral Square, Birmingham. They are looking for people under 25 in a number of volunteer roles.
Computer Game Development Volunteer
No experience or skills needed! Time to Change have linked up with a game developer to produce a PS3 game and want volunteers to give a day or two to help design the game ready to launch at the Change Village event where it will be available for people to play.
Parkour Volunteer
Parkour is similar to free running. Time to Change are holding a couple of workshops where they will train you ready to do a performance on the day of the Change Village.
Human Library Volunteer
If you have an experience of mental health you could help break down the stigma surrounding the topic by being a human library. Instead of taking out a book about the subject people can hear from those with direct experience. Training will be given
General Event Volunteer
Volunteers are also needed to help run the event on the day. They are needed to welcome people to the event, man stalls and give out information about the campaign. Volunteers will be given training to carry out their roles.
