Guild Council is here to make sure you have the best university experience possible and can hold the elected Officer Team to account. 80 Guild Councillors represent every element of the student community, and one of them represents you!

What is Guild Council?

Through Guild Council, students at the University of Birmingham decide the policy of the Guild and ensure that it is working effectively for its membership. Guild Council is the highest student decision making body within the Guild of Students. A good way to describe Council is to imagine it as your student parliament, and the Guild Councillors are your elected MPs. Any student is welcome to attend a Guild Council meeting and we’d love to see you there!

Want to understand Guild Council more. Then take a look through the Guild Council guidance notes which are the definitive set of notes on how Guild Council runs.

What does Guild Council do?

The Guild of Students supports a huge range of issues and campaigns across campus. Guild Council passes motions ranging from making a commitment to provide mobility and access arrangements for disabled students, right the way through to taking a stance on the Government cuts to Higher Education funding. For a comprehensive view of the Guild’s position on issues affecting you, see our Beliefs and Commitments.

How can you get involved?

Any student studying at the University of Birmingham is eligible to submit a motion to Guild Council. This process enables students to propose changes to the Guild’s Beliefs and Commitment on issues affecting students, or to mandate Guild Officers to take action on a particular area of the student experience that students feel needs improving.

To submit a motion all you need to do is download this template and follow the instructions (if you have trouble downloading the form, please contact council@guild.bham.ac.uk). Generally speaking, if you make your motions clear, concise and typographically correct they have a lot better chance of being well received.

Once you’ve written the motion all you need to do is email it to council@guild.bham.ac.uk
