As a member of the Guild of Students, there are literally hundreds of students working to ensure that your views are heard and that your concerns are taken on board. There are more than a thousand students involved in representing other students and because of their hard work, the Guild of Students is at the forefront of making your time at the University of Birmingham as worthwhile as possible.
Guild Officer Group
The Guild Officer Group is comprised of full-time Sabbatical Officers and part-time Non-Sabbatical Officers. They provide democratic leadership to the Guild of Students and ensure that the Guild is working on issues of most relevance to students. They also represent your views to the University, local community and to wider society, ensuring that the voice of Birmingham’s students is heard at all levels.
Find out what Guild Officers are doing and let them know what you think about important issues by visiting their blogs and leaving comments. The Guild Officers want to hear about your experiences at University and what you think the Guild should be focusing on.
Student Reps
If you have an issue you would like to bring to the attention of your school, use the Student Representation System (Student Reps). Your programme or department will elect Student Reps at the beginning of every academic year and it is their duty to represent your views to the University.
Over the last year, Student Reps across the University have achieved significant changes such as raising the issue of inadequate feedback and assessment, gaining more resources, amending modules and requesting better timetabling. Student Reps in the school of Health and Population Sciences even secured free printing credits for all students on their course.
The Student Reps for your area of study should be making their presence known to you via posters, emails and lecture shout-outs but if you are not sure who you should be directing your comments to, you can find your representative here.
Guild Councillors
Guild Council exists to ensure that the Guild of Students and its work remains relevant to students. Guild Council is a public meeting where students can come to discuss the issues that matter to them. It gives students the power to hold their Guild Officer Group to account, to instruct their Guild of Students, to prioritise an issue and set the Guild of Students’ position on key issues.
All students are represented by Guild Councillors elected from each College. Your Guild Councillors represent you on the issues discussed at Guild Council and vote in line with what they believe to be the general view of the students they represent. They can also raise issues on your behalf if you believe there is something that the Guild of Students needs to be working on.
If you are a member of a Student Group, your Student Group’s committee sends a representative to Guild Council to represent your Student Group membership. If you want to get in touch with your Student Group’s Guild Councillor, please get in touch with your Student Group’s committee.
