► Make Yourself Heard

Make Yourself Heard (Your Voice) Header

Of course, you don’t need to rely on other students to represent you – you can get involved yourself and have a direct impact on the work of the Guild of Students.

Becoming a Student Rep

Becoming a Student Rep is a great opportunity for you to work with staff and students within your School to make your experience at university as valuable as possible. Student Reps are appointed from within your School or Department and it is their responsibility to organise an election for all Student Rep positions at the beginning of the year. You will need to contact your School Office for details of when this will happen by. Most elections take place towards mid/end of October.

If you become a Student Rep, you will receive training from the Guild of Students that will give you all the information and skills you will need to be an effective Student Rep. For more information about training and how we support our student reps, please visit our Student Rep webpage.

Having your say at Guild Council

There are many ways you can get involved in Guild Council, thereby helping to direct the work of the Guild of Students.

Firstly, you can become a Guild Councillor by representing your Student Group or by standing in October’s Guild Councillor Elections. In October, students in every College will elect a number of students that will represent them and their views at Guild Council. If you become a Guild Councillor, you will help make key decisions through engaging in policy debates and holding the Guild Officer Team to account. You will be trained by the Guild of Students to ensure that you have all the skills and knowledge you need to be an effective Guild Councillor. For more information about our Guild Councillor elections, please visit our Elections Webpage or email elections@guild.bham.ac.uk.

However, if you choose not to become a Guild Councillor, you can still get involved in Guild Council. Any student can attend Council meetings and get involved in their business. As a student, you have the right to ask the Guild Officer Team about the work they are doing and you can use these questions to highlight the issues that are important to you.

You can also submit a motion to Guild Council. Guild Council Motions are items for debate at the meetings and are a good way of committing the Guild of Students to working on an issue that you are passionate about. For information and submitting motions, visit our Guild Council webpage.
