Guild Officers are elected by students every year to lead the Guild of Students. Each officer has a different remit and it is their role to take the Guild forward in their specific area to improve the student experience. The Guild Officer Group consists of sabbatical (full-time) and Non-Sabbatical (part-time) Officers.

President
The President leads the Officer Team and the Guild, with responsibility for ensuring that your views about your education and welfare are represented and heard at every level within the University. Most importantly, the president makes sure you get the most out of your student experience at Birmingham.
The Vice President (Democracy & Resources) is responsible for ensuring that elections run smoothly, as well as making sure that campaigns and Guild Council are working in your interests. The Officer oversees the Guild’s communication channels, facilities and events at the Guild and considers the need to invest in representation, support and involvement.
This Officer represents students in University halls and in the local community, working to ensure they get the best from their accommodation. The Vice President (Housing & Community) works closely with Residence Associations (RAs) to ensure that the concerns and issues of students in halls are represented. They also work with Student Mentors in halls to ensure students’ welfare needs are met, while also aiding the excellent work of the Community Wardens to ensure a better Selly Oak for all residents. This officer also supports the SHAC – the new lettings agency for students at the University.
The Vice President (Sport) focuses on access to sports, participation and provision of sport, leading the development of performance sports, seeking to improve sporting facilities and provisions, supports Guild sports clubs, the Active Lifestyle programme and Intra-mural sport. Vice President (Sport) works to promote healthy living and the well-being of students.
The Vice President (Student Activities & Development) works closely with student groups by helping students develop and champion the diverse array of activity they undertake both on a local and national level. The second part of the role involves emphasising the skill-set that students develop whilst undertaking student activity and highlighting how this, in addition to their academic studies, will stand students in good stead during their working life.
The Vice President (Welfare) protects your rights as a student and ensures that you know your rights, be it in education, housing, finances or employment. They fight for equal opportunities, religious freedoms and liberation. They support and direct the Guild’s welfare services; the Advice & Representation Centre (ARC), the Student Mentor Scheme and the Job Zone.
The Vice President (Education & Access) will represent the 28,000 students at the University of Birmingham on academic issues, to ensure students get the highest quality of teaching, feedback and assessment. On your behalf, the Officer attends senior committees such University Senate and the Quality Assurance and Enhancement Committee, to ensure that the student voice is heard at the highest levels.
The Officer promotes tolerance, respect, diversity and equality for all, at the Guild of Students, the University of Birmingham and the wider community.
The Officer works to further the interests of black and minority ethnic students, and in doing so will work closely with the Birmingham Ethnic Minority Association.
The Officer will work to ensure all decisions that have ethical and environmental implications are fully considered within the Guild. The Officer liaises with the University and their Sustainability and Environmental Task Force, works with relevant student groups and communicates all information back to students.
This Officer will represent all students that live at their family home, working to ensure that students who choose not to live in halls or in the local community are not unfairly disadvantaged.
The Officer will work to further the interests of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer students, supported by the Guild and University in working towards the social and academic equality of all students.
Students play a positive role in the community with many students getting involved in community activities or supporting community groups. The Community Action Officer promotes a positive student image to the community and ensures that local residents understand the issues that students face when living in the community. They work closely with the Vice-President of (Housing and Community) to give students a voice within the community and work within the Guild to promote community volunteering. They also work with Community Wardens to co-ordinate Community Action Days.
Even in today’s society, women still suffer from sexism and discrimination; issues such as the pay gap and domestic abuse are still as relevant today as they were forty years ago. The Women’s Officer works to raise awareness of these issues within the student body and motive female students to get involved in student campaigns to address these issues. They also work with other Guild Officers and Guild services, to ensure that the Guild of Students places the needs and concerns of women at the heart of all its actions.
Responsible for looking out for the needs of students who are based off the main Edgbaston campus such as the Medical School, Ironbridge and Shakespeare Institutes or Selly Oak campus.
International Students face a range of issues and challenges unique to studying in a foreign country. They pay far higher fees than UK students, there may be cultural barriers to overcome and they may need additional help with accessing essentials such as healthcare and housing. The International Students’ Officer provides international students a powerful and effective champion within the Guild and University. The Guild works with the University to ensure that the unique challenges of international students are overcome, so that they have a great time at Birmingham.
One of the greatest barriers that disabled students face is the attitude of other people. There’s a great deal of misunderstanding and confusion surrounding disabilities, and there is often a stigma attached to ‘coming out’ as a disabled student. The Officer provides disabled students with a voice, campaigning to remove the stigma from all disabilities, and encourages people to take a positive attitude towards understanding disability and overcoming their prejudices. They work with other Guild Officers and disabled students to support and represent disabled students throughout the Guild and University.
With over 7,500 postgraduates, Birmingham has one of the largest postgraduate communities in the country. The Guild strives to give these postgraduates the representation and support they need, representing postgraduate students on Guild Council and Student Staff Committees and lobbying the University on the issues that matter to postgraduates. The Postgraduate and Mature Students’ Officer works to make the Guild and its services more accessible and relevant to postgraduates and campaigns on issues that both postgraduate and mature students can experience, representing the needs of postgraduate students at Guild Council. This Officer is the co-chair of the Postgraduate and Mature Students’ Association.
