► Mitigations

What are mitigations?

During your studies at University, you may become ill or encounter other circumstances that may affect your academic performance.

The process of dealing with this is called MITIGATIONS.

Mitigations are submissions by you as students to your school or department, which draw attention to your specific situation. There are many different circumstances which may affect you during your studies due to reasons beyond your control. Here are a few examples:
• Illness or other medical conditions (of yourself or close family member)
• Hospitalisation
• Severe financial difficulties
• Bereavement
• Acute personal/emotional circumstances/family problems

The process of Mitigations is there to lessen the pressure for those students who may be going through a stressful time.

Do they apply to me?

This is your own judgment call. If you feel that your academic performance may be suffering, no matter how slight, as a result of circumstances out of your control then DO submit MITIGATIONS. It is better to be safe than sorry! Speak to your Mitigations Officer or visit the Guilds Advice and Representation Centre (ARC) for advice on whether or not you are eligible.

Mitigations apply to all forms of assessments; essays, assignments, class tests, dissertations and final exams. So, not matter what time of year, whether on-going or not, your mitigations will be valid if you follow the correct procedure.
