Anyone can come along to Guild Council, find out what’s going on and have their say in the debates that take place. But to be able to vote you must be an official Guild Councillor.
All societies and residence associations can send one voting member to Guild Council meetings. Other Guild Councillors are elected to represent students in their Schools.
Motions submitted to Guild Council are the most effective way of making change happen at the Guild. And you don’t have to be an elected Guild Councillor to write a motion: any student at the Guild can submit motions for Guild Council to debate.
Motions can cover whatever topic it is you feel passionately about, from better services for students at the Guild, to lobbying the University for improved resources, to mandating the Guild to get involved in a national or international campaign.
You can download the template for writing a motion here.
Generally speaking, you should fill in all the sections to make sure your points are put across as clearly and compellingly as possible. For inspiration, why not have a look at these example motions which were passed at Guild Council last year:
Motion: Now is the Library of our Discontent
Motion: Support Physics Funding!
Motions should be submitted to the Independent Chairs at least two weeks before the next Guild Council meeting. You can email your motion to indchairs@guild.bham.ac.uk or alternatively drop it in to the Representation and Democracy office in the Guild.
If you have any questions about motions or you want some advice on writing one please email democracy@guild.bham.ac.uk
