► Housing

 Housing

Where you live whilst at University is as important as what subject you are studying. During your time at Birmingham, you may live in both University and Private Rented Accommodation.

Advisors at the ARC provide information and support on the following housing issues:

  • How to find a property?
  • Housing Contracts
  • Paying for your property
  • Your Rights & Responsibilities when Renting
  • Getting your deposit back
  • Repairs
  • Ending Your Tenancy
  • Dealing with Harassment
  • Eviction
  • Council tax

The ARC also allows you to advertise for a housemate or offer your room for rent, by providing a current Gas Safety Certificate for the property. Students can speak to an Advisor in confidence via an appointment or collect a range of literature from the ARC, including the Advice Direct Housing series.

Sources of Help

University Accommodation

Housing Services manages all University allocated student accommodation. [Note: not all students will be able to get a place in University accommodation]. Accommodation is available for undergraduates, postgraduates and families. There is a mix of catered and self-catered, halls of residence and houses. Student Pad is a great service that helps you find accommodation in the local area and beyond. Click here http://www.studentpad.co.uk/birmingham/search.asp

Student Mentor Scheme (link to SMS pages)

The Student Mentor Scheme provides welfare support for students living in most University accommodation. A team of permanent staff manage the scheme. The Mentors themselves are students, who live in University residences and are fully trained to help their fellow students to cope with any welfare problems they might experience.

Private Accommodation

There are a huge number of private landlords renting properties to students close to the University. Refer to the Advice Direct series for advice on how to find a property and when and where to start looking. The Student Housing Guide contains a useful 'House Hunting Checklist' to get you started.
