► Becoming a Rep

Becoming a Rep (Your Voice) Header

Could you speak up for students in your School? Want to make sure you stand out from the crowd? If you are interested in supporting others on your course and having your say in what happens within your School then becoming a Rep is for you!

Role Description

This is the minimum that is expected from all Student Reps across the University – although lots of Reps go on to do much more!

  • Proactively seek fellow students’ opinions on the University and their course.

  • Publicise yourself to students in your School, and make sure they know how to    contact you.

  • Attend Staff Student Committee meetings and represent the views of students to School staff.

  • Let students in your School know the outcomes of Staff Student Committee meetings and how any changes being made will affect them.

  • Keep up to date with issues affecting your School, the University and Higher Education in general.

  • Feedback to the Guild issues that students are facing and the changes that are to be made.

An average commitment of five hours each month is expected of all Reps, to include attendance at one training session and attendance at a minimum of three Staff Student Committee meetings throughout the year.

Benefits

We think that being a Rep is a great thing to get involved in – you can be sure that you are making a real difference to the other students in your School. And on top of the feel-good factor, here are just some of the other benefits of being a Rep:

  • Accreditation for the work you do both through the PSA scheme and the Guild’s volunteering initiative.

  • Access to training in a wide range of areas including communication and negotiation skills.

  • Increased employability as you pick up a wide range of skills and experience through your work.

  • Opportunities to get more involved through campaigns and forums or by becoming a Senate Rep.

  • Invitation to the Guild’s volunteering ball and awards ceremony.

So how do I become a Rep?

It is the responsibility of your School or Department to appoint Student Reps. This is usually done by elections, so you will have to nominate yourself in your Departments. You will need to contact your Department office for details of when this will happen by – most elections take place towards the middle or end of October.

If you have any problems finding out about the Reps Scheme within your School, or you have further questions about being a Rep, please email
studentreps@guild.bham.ac.uk and we will be happy to help!
