The Student Rep System is jointly run by the Guild of Students and University of Birmingham. Its aim is to ensure that every student and postgraduate researcher has a say in the academic experience they receive at Birmingham.
Every student and postgraduate researcher at the University of Birmingham is represented by at least one Student Rep in their department. Student Reps are in place to gather the ‘academic related’ questions and issues facing the students or postgraduate researchers they represent (known as ‘constituents’).
Each Student Rep is part of a Staff Student Committee where Student Reps and university staff meet together. Staff Student committee members work together to address the questions and issues raised by constituents. Committee members must also provide feedback to constituents on the work they are undertaking and the outcomes they have achieved.
University staff may also wish to consult students and postgraduate researchers on academic matters relating to their study, research or School. In this situation, Student Reps are in an ideal position to go out and gather the views of their constituents, and feedback these responses to staff.
If you don’t know who your Student Rep is and would like to get in touch with them, please email studentreps@guild.bham.ac.uk.

In a nutshell, the role of a Student Rep is to gather and represent the academic related views of the students or postgraduate researchers in their School, and work with staff to address them. For more information about the Student Rep role, please download the Student Rep role description.
The Student Rep System is great to be involved in. You can be sure that you are making a difference to the other students or researchers in your School, as well as making friends, getting to know staff, and learning more about Higher Education. It is also a fantastic opportunity for students to develop key employability skills.
Student Reps can also:
1. Receive accreditation for their role through the University’s Personal Skills Award Scheme (currently only available to undergraduate students) and the Guild’s Volunteering Scheme.
2. Become a Student Rep Chair or Secretary which involves receiving additional training and development opportunities.
3. Get involved in a number of other interesting and important representation opportunities at University including becoming a representative on Senate, the highest academic decision making body within the University.
