My name is David Merriam; I’m a third year history student and am running for the position of NUS delegate. Although not previously involved in student politics and the NUS I am enthusiastic about the issues and representing the university at the conference. I would bring a fresh and pragmatic approach to NUS politics looking at every issue individually and considering the situations without previous accumulated bias. My first policy is supporting a cap on university tuition fees to avoid the move towards a hugely expensive and elitist American-style system. Secondly I would be arguing for the end of the NUS extra cards which were too expensive and should have been included in our guild cards. Lastly on the subject of NUS governmental reform I would support the end of the regional parliaments and streamlined system; cutting out bureaucracy and getting to the heart of the real issues that affect students. Generally I’d like to see change and believe that the NUS is an organisation which students don’t really relate with as it stands- this needs to be different. The NUS should address more of the actual issues instead of involving itself in fundamentally useless campaigns over political correctness.
