President

As the President the role consists of three key things. The first is to lead the Officer Team and the Guild. Also, to be responsible for ensuring that your views concerning your education and welfare are represented and heard at every level within the University. Most importantly, the president is here to make sure you get the most of your student experience at Birmingham.

Vice President (Democracy & Resources)

The Vice President (Democracy & Resources) is responsible for ensuring that elections run smoothly, as well as making sure that things like campaigns and Guild Council are working in your interests. The Officer oversees the Guild’s communication channels and democracy. They balance the needs of the Guild’s income streams against the needs of investing in representation, support and involvement. They also look after the facilities and events that happen in the Guild.

Vice President (Housing & Community)

This Officer represents students in University halls and in the local community, working to ensure they get the best from their accommodation. The Vice President (Housing & Community) works closely with Residence Associations (RAs) to ensure that the concerns and issues of students in halls are represented. They also work with Student Mentors in halls to ensure students’ welfare needs are met, while also aiding the excellent work of the Community Wardens to ensure a better Selly Oak for all residents. In addition to this, it is part of their role to bridge links between the University, the local community, City Council and landlord associations to improve housing and community for students.

Vice President (Sport)

As Vice President (Sport) they will by your representative for all sporting activities. It is their job to look after issues including access to sports, participation and provision of sport, leading the development of performance sports, seeking to improve sporting facilities and provisions, support Guild sports clubs, and improve non-performance sport such as Active Lifestyles and Intra-mural sports. They also work closely with the Vice President (Student Activities & Development) to help progress the development of student–led sports.

Vice President (Student Activities & Development)

The Vice President’s (Student Activities & Development) role incorporates two main areas; firstly, they work closely with student groups and volunteering by helping students develop and champion the diverse array of activity that they undertake both on a local and national level. The second part of the role involves emphasizing the “skill-set” that students develop whilst undertaking student activity and highlighting how this, in addition to their academic studies, will stand students in good stead during their working life.

Vice President (Welfare)

The VP Welfare is here to make sure that you are represented fairly throughout your time at University. It is their job to protect your rights as a student, but most importantly, to make sure that you know your rights, be it in education, housing, finances or employment. They are here to fight for equal opportunities, religious freedoms and liberation. They also support and direct the Guild’s welfare services, for example the Advice & Representation Centre (ARC), the Student Mentor Scheme and the Job Zone.

Vice President (Education & Access)

The Vice President (Education & Access) will represent the 28,000 students at the University of Birmingham on academic issues. This will ensure students get the highest quality of teaching, feedback and assessment. That is why, on your behalf, the Officers will attend senior committees such University Senate and the Quality Assurance and Enhancement Committee; to make sure the student voice is heard at the highest levels.

Anti Racism & Anti Fascism Officer will promote tolerance, respect, diversity and equality for all, in the Guild of Students, the University of Birmingham and the wider community.

Ethnic Minority Officer

The Ethnic Minority Officer will work to further the interests of black and minority ethnic students, and in doing so will work closely with the Birmingham Ethnic Minority Association.

Ethical & Environmental Officer

The Ethical & Environmental Officer will work to ensure all decisions that have Ethical and Environmental implications are fully considered within the Guild. The Officer will liaise with the University and their Sustainability and Environmental Task Force, work with the relevant student groups, and relay all information back to students.

Home Students Officer

An increasing proportion of applicants and students are from the West Midlands area and remain living in their family home while they come to University. As Home Students Officer they will represent all students that live at home, working to ensure that students who choose not to live in halls or in the local community are not unfairly disadvantaged.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans & Queer Students Officer

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans & Queer Students Officer will work to further the interests of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer students. The Officer will do this with the Guild and University working towards the social and academic equality of all students.

Satellite Students Officer

The University has a large number of students studying a wide variety of courses. Not all of these students are based on the main Edgbaston campus though. Some students are medics or nurses on placement or in the Medical School, others are studying further afield; at the Ironbridge and Shakespeare Institutes, or Selly Oak Campus. As the Satellite Sites Officer, it is their responsibility to look out for the needs of these students and to ensure that all Birmingham students have an equal opportunity whilst at University.

International Students’ Officer

International Students face a range of issues and challenges unique to studying in a foreign country. They pay far higher fees than UK students, there may be cultural barriers to overcome and they may need additional help with accessing essentials such as healthcare and housing. The Guild works with the University to ensure that these unique challenges are overcome, and that international students have a great time at Birmingham. The International Students’ Officer takes the lead in this work, giving international students a powerful and effective champion within the Guild and University. They work to ensure that international students get the support, services and representation they need. Candidates are expected to be an international student.

Community Action Officer

Students play a positive role in the community with many students getting involved in community activities or supporting community groups. The Community Action Officer exists to promote a positive student image to the community and ensure that local residents understand the issues that students face when living in the community. They will work closely with the Vice-President of (Housing and Community) to give students a voice within the community and work within the Guild to promote community volunteering. They will also work with the Community Wardens to co-ordinate Community Action Days. Becoming the Community Action Officer offers you a unique chance to work with a wide range of students and encourage them to get involved in community action.

Disabled Students’ Officer

One of the greatest barriers that disabled students face is the attitude of other people. There’s a great deal of misunderstanding and confusion surrounding disabilities, and there is often a stigma attached to ‘coming out’ as a disabled student.
The Disabled Students’Officer exists to give disabled students a voice. It campaigns to remove the stigma from all disabilities, and to encourage all members of our society to take a positive attitude towards understanding the nature of disability and overcoming prejudices. They work with other Guild Officers and disabled students to support and represent disabled students throughout the Guild and University. Candidates are expected to self define as being disabled.

Women’s Officer

Even in today’s society women still suffer from sexism and discrimination; issues such as the pay gap, the glass ceiling and domestic abuse are still as relevant today as they were forty years ago. The Women’s Officer works to raise awareness of these issues within the student body and motive female students to get involved in student campaigns to address these issues. They also work with other Guild Officers and Guild services, to ensure that the Guild of Students places the needs and concerns of women at the heart of all its actions. The Women’s Officer is also an active member of the NUS Women’s Campaign and as such works to represent Birmingham students at a national level by working with Women’s Officers from across the country. Candidates are expected to be women.

Postgraduate & Mature Students Officer

With over 7,500 postgraduates, Birmingham has one of the largest postgraduate communities in the country. The Guild strives to give these postgraduates the representation and support they need. It provides a dedicated postgraduate social space and worker, guarantees postgraduate representation on Guild Council and Student Staff Committees and lobbies the University on the issues that matter to postgraduates.

However, the support that the Guild provides for postgraduates will only be fully effective if there is an effective Postgraduate and Mature Students’ Officer. The Postgraduate and Mature Students’ Officer works to make the Guild and its services more accessible and relevant to postgraduates The Postgraduate and Mature Students’ Officer also represents mature undergraduates, and campaigns on issues that both postgraduate and mature students can experience during their time at university. They  do this by representing the needs of postgraduate students at the Guild Officer Group and at Guild Council. They are also the co-chair of the Postgraduate and Mature Students’ Association.
