The Guild building is one of the largest students’ union buildings in the country, and we have a range of shops, services, catering outlets and bars designed just for you. Read on for an A-Z of what’s inside the Guild and how we’re changing for the better…
Advice & Representation Centre (ARC)
The ARC is a professional peer led service, offering free and impartial advice to students on a wide range of issues from housing to sexual health for all students at the University of Birmingham.
Bars & Clubs
Joe’s is the Guild’s main bar and largest venue. It is being re-located and re-named, to create an attractive, new and improved bar/restaurant offering high-quality food. The new bar will be a comfortable place to relax and meet friends in the day and the perfect venue for a great night out in the evening. The Underground is one of the Guild’s club night and entertainment venues, which comes to life on Saturdays for Fab ‘n’ Fresh.
Common Room
For students who want to relax with friends, go over study notes or catch up on reading. There is also a cluster of computers, so you can get online. If facilities at your department are just too busy, consider using the Common Room.
Community Warden Scheme
The scheme is in place to address issues in the Selly Oak and Bournbrook community where many students live. The Scheme’s offices are located in the Guild building.
Conference & Meeting Rooms
The Guild has a range of meeting and conference spaces. They are available for booking by members of student groups and societies.
Debating Hall (Deb Hall)
Where the Guild hosts musical and theatre productions, and well as evening and day time events and entertainments.
Guild Council Chambers
Where Guild Council meets regularly throughout the year.
Guild Officer Group Offices
The Officer Group are based in the Guild building, pop up to say hello!
Islamic Prayer Room
The Guild’s own prayer room with wash room facilities.
Job Zone
The Job Zone is the Guild’s employment service, and can help you find part time and vacation work to support you financially whilst at University.
Media Suite
Home of media groups such as Redbrick, the University’s student newspaper, Guild Television (G:TV) and Burn FM.
Reception
The first port of call when you enter the Guild building via the main entrance. You can make enquires and pick up information or be directed to where you want to go from here. Reception can answer most of your queries and direct you to
where you need to be on campus and in the Guild.
Students Groups & Societies, Volunteering & Residence Associations
Student Development is the home of student groups, societies and volunteering. The Guild has over 190 student groups and societies, and over 200 different volunteering opportunities. Support for Residence Associations is also co-ordinated from here.
Student Mentor Scheme
The Scheme is the Guild’s welfare support system in University accommodation. The Scheme is co-ordinated via offices in the Guild building.
Retail
The new Retail area at the Guild of Students will be transformed!In addition to accommodating our own STA Travel and Spar, the area will also include:
Zest - a new store selling University branded clothing and merchandise.
Look out for exciting new merchandise ranges and promotional offers!
SmartFixIT - a new computer repairs and support service.
Printshop - located in SmartFixIT, it will take care of your printing and binding needs.
SHAC - a new lettings agency for students wanting to live locally in private accommodation.
The Guild also has its own Subway franchise located outside the retail area.
