[4] Arsheen Rajpar*
Hi, my name is Arsheen and I would like to be your NUS National Representative. There are so many important issues affecting students that I feel can only be dealt with effectively through the NUS, and that’s why I want to get involved.
My first priority is fairer funding of higher education; the tuition fee cap is being reviewed in 2009 and may well come off altogether unless students present a strong united front for fairer funding arrangements.
Another issue I feel very strong...

[10] David Merriam*
My name is David Merriam; I’m a third year history student and am running for the position of NUS delegate. Although not previously involved in student politics and the NUS I am enthusiastic about the issues and representing the university at the conference. I would bring a fresh and pragmatic approach to NUS politics looking at every issue individually and considering the situations without previous accumulated bias. My first policy is supporting a cap on university tuit...
[11] Hannah Lazell*
As Vice President Democracy and Resources 08/09, I have a real understanding of student representation. I wish to take this to the NUS, as I believe experience and vision such as mine will make a valuable contribution to national representation.
The NUS extra card already provides good discounts – but it comes at a cost, and I believe that you should be getting more and better discounts at a wider variety of locations. If elected, I will lobby the NUS to do this to you g...
[12] Hollie Jones*
Hi, my name is Hollie, and I would like you to send me to NUS Conference.
Our NUS delegates must ensure that the issues of Birmingham students are highlighted nationally.
You need to know what issues are discussed at conference and how you are being represented. I’ll consult as many students as possible before submitting policy to conference on behalf of Birmingham, and use my officer blog to keep you informed.
The three issues in my manifesto are higher education funding, the ...

[25] Guild Staff Benefits*
Flexible Working
The Guild values its staff and recognises that they all have different demands and pressures outside of their working hours. In order to maintain operational needs and to look after the welfare of staff, the Guild operates on annualised hours. This means that staff work a set number of hours during the year, and how they manage these hours is up to the staff member and their line manager so they can be as flexible as they need to be.
We were a finalist i...
[26] Emma 'Pacman' Packham*
Statement
Being an active student I have cherished the personal development and skills gained through part-time work in the Alumni Office, being an ambassador to the Business School, on the departmental Netball team, and being part of a thriving society. Combined with my academic studies, these skills and opportunities have resulted in endless fun and strong friendships, making my time at University complete. Being dynamic around the University, and relatively new to the “inner-Guild&rd...

[28] Annie Tickell*
Statement
I’m Annie Tickell and I am running for VP Student Activities and Development. I love being involved in a society and meeting new people and this is what has made university unique and entertaining. This has made me want future students to have a similar involvement in the Guild and enjoy it as much as I have. I want more students to get involved in societies and volunteering, making it clear that the Guild offers more than just Fab and Fresh on a Saturday night. I want student...
[29] Carmem Werren*
Statement
Having been involved in many and varied Student Groups, as well as Guild Council, I feel I understand why students participate in Guild activities and the ways in which we can improve things to encourage more students to get involved.
Individual students deserve a system of training and accreditation which encourages and demonstrates why they should get involved with our groups and activities. I would seek feedback from students to see how better we could support the...
[30] Roisin Sarsfield *
Statement
“All growth depends upon activity. There is no development physically or intellectually without effort, and effort means work.” - Calvin Coolidge.
I feel that this quote sums up the role of VPSAD quite well. “All growth depends on activity” can be linked to the encouragement of students to join student groups at university, which is one of the primary tasks of the VPSAD. “No development without effort” is also very true for the role. I am...
[31] James Williams*
Written Statement – James Williams
“I’m not a member of the NUS; I don’t have an NUS extra card!” This is a phrase I’ve heard far too much of, and it highlights the key issues relating to the NUS and its relationship with everyday students.
Students aren’t aware that the Guild is part of the NUS, and as they are members of the Guild they are members of the NUS. Both the Guild and the NUS need to address their communication to students, regardle...

[33] Catharine Taylor*
Statement
Hi, I’m Cath Taylor, and I’m running to be your next VP Student Activities & Development.
I’m a postgraduate student, and was an undergraduate here too, so I have lots of experience with student groups. I’ve gone from being an uninvolved fresher, to a third year society committee secretary, to now being a volunteer, a temporary residents association VP, and a Guild Councillor sitting on Student Groups Committee.
I want everyone to have the chance I ...
[34] Alex Wright*
In previous years the NUS has let you down by spending more time worrying about its own internal structures than effectively campaigning for a better deal for students. I want to see a more streamlined, accessible union that listens to your voice as the NUS moves to challenge the government for fairer education funding in the upcoming 2009 Higher Education review. If the NUS does any more navel-gazing instead of getting on with what it's supposed to do we could see the cap on fees removed co...

[36] Fabian Neuner*
Fabian Guy Neuner for NUS delegate:
Students will be facing many challenges next year. Besides the credit crunch we will be facing a government seeking to renegotiate the Higher Education funding system which could potentially see the cap on tuition fees disappear (hence us having to pay whatever the Uni wants us to pay). Additionally the government could introduce plans to break up student areas by introducing HMO quotas, thereby trying to de-studentify areas like Selly Oak.
In the ...
[37] Sam Harrow*
Written Statement – NUS Delegate Election – Sam Harrow - 863569
The NUS is about more than just the discount card you might have in your pocket – they represent and empower students. The Guild pays to be affiliated to the organisation, and part of the cost of NUS Extra cards contributes too, so it’s important you get your money’s worth. Delegates to the NUS Annual Conference have an important role in shaping the future of the NUS and, as such, the future of ...

IN WASTE DEEP?
EXTRA RUBBISH COLLECTIONS
The end of the University year sees a mass exodus of students from Selly Oak, leaving a large amount of rubbish in the streets. This is unattractive for the local residents who live in Selly Oak and can lead to vermin!
In order to help keep the streets as clean as possible, there will be a number of extra rubbish collections in Selly Oak, in addition to your normal collections.

[44] News: Student drivers could get up to 48% off with Endsleigh! (14/01/2009)*

[45] Safe & Secure*
The local area consists of a number of different types of housing, yet the most common type in the Bournbrook neighbourhood are privately rented terrace houses - home to approximately 8,000 students!
Security is a big issue to think about when considering renting a property. Bear in mind the following statistics:
* Privately rented student housing is twice as likely to be
* burgled compared to that of owner occupied.
* Houses which have no security are nearly 10 times more likely t...

Who you Should Live With?
Choose people with similar outlooks:
Some people you know may seem very nice to go for drinks with or may inform you about the best parties, but if they are too different then it may be very stressful living with them. Choose people who wake at similar times, who are of similar dispositions and have similar interests. Try to choose people who will be a good influence on you! Make sure you are on the same wave length when it comes to household cleaning, partn...
