Student Mentors

Confidentiality and Data Protection

Confidentiality

The Student Mentor Scheme provides a confidential service and we respect students’ privacy at all times. We will not disclose to another service or individual when a student has accessed the service or share their information.

However, in some extreme situations there may be a need to break confidentiality and share the information a student tells us. Before any breach of confidentiality, we will make every attempt to discuss this with the student first in order to gain informed consent. However, if this is not possible, or the severity of the information disclosed is considered high risk, action will be taken immediately.

This may happen under the following circumstances:

  • If a student discloses that they are going to harm themselves (or has already) or will harm others (or has already).
  • If a student discloses that they - or someone they know - is dealing drugs, the Student Mentor Scheme is obliged to act on this information accordingly, if necessary informing the University.
  • Where the law requires disclosure of information for the prevention and detection of crime.

Please note: All information will be held and dealt with strictly according to the University’s Data Protection Policy and The Data Protection Act 1998.
