I’ve got some great news to share and it’s an absolutely huge manifesto win for you all!
I promised you that if I was elected, I’d make sure that the university recognise that some students have to work whilst at university and that this can affect some students’ ability to study.
When I looked at the grounds by which a student could get extenuating circumstances, I was shocked to see that financial hardship and the need to work for financial reasons was not included! That’s why I began to lobby the university to make a change to that document and to make sure that your studies can be supported if you need it.
It doesn’t mean that you should be working 40 hours a week (you shouldn’t be working any more than 16 hours per week if you’re on a full time course by the way!) but it does mean that if things are really difficult and you HAVE TO, then you will be supported academically through that.
I’m really happy about this, and I hope you are too. I hope not many of you have to use this, but I am really glad it’s there if anyone needs it.
The process for completion of this change will now commence and I will confirm exactly when it’s in place – but absolutely, absolutely by the next academic year!
