Helena says: LGBTQ+ Sport Campaign Review
From the 6th till the 11th of November I ran an LGBTQ+ Sport Awareness campaign with the aim to shout loud and proud about how inclusive UBSport is to our LGBTQ+ community. During the week 4 amazing students wrote about their experiences at the University and their sports clubs. Take a look at their stories here.
Lucy, your LGBTQ Officer, and the rest of the Officer team (as well as my house mates!) also helped me out at xpLosION, UoB Sport’s annual showpiece American Football event, where we sold rainbow races, rainbow sweets and did some glitter face painting. All the money raised will be going to the Stonewall Charity so I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped and donated!
The American Footballers also showed their support for the campaign by wearing rainbow laces for their game. It was such a great atmosphere and also an amazing win for the team – so well done to them!
Over the week we had loads of sports clubs showing their support by either having themed training sessions or joining in with a rainbow/glitter themed sports night. It was a great week filled with so many rainbows and glitter – a massive thank you to everybody that took part or got behind the campaign in any way! It’s so important to remember that everyone is welcome to get involved with sport at UoB. Whether it’s a sports club or an exercise class, all members of the LGBTQ+ community should feel no barrier to sport.
Take a look at what some of our clubs got up to during the campaign week:
