Henny’s best of Brum!
I want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to get the best out of their time in Birmingham. There are so many amazing places to visit and cool events happening that it’s sometimes hard to keep up! That’s why I’m writing this blog series, each time giving you my top 5 places you should visit that week. Plus in order to maintain that healthy balanced lifestyle you need to take time out your studies to switch off, relax and enjoy yourself. Here are this week’s top 5:
1. Eis Cafe
A hidden treasure. If you want a sugar overload, this place is a must. Can’t decide between brownies or a milkshake? No worries - just combine the two together and you get the perfect sweet tooth combo. Every milkshake or sugary dessert is Instagram worthy. The hardest decision is choosing which sugary desert to go for. Some of their favourites are the Fudge Brownie & Roasted Marshmallow Locoshake and the Oreo Nutella & Cookie Crumble Stuffed Donuts.
2. Winterbourne Gardens
Just a 5 minute walk from central campus and free for students with Student ID, Winterbourne Gardens are a great place to get some fresh air, switch off and de-stress. It’s also a top location for a game of hide and seek with your housemates – trust me. It’s also only £5 for a giant pot of Afternoon Tea and a fruit scone. If you want to buy a house warming plant, you can pick up a small cactus from the shop for just £3.
This is my absolute favourite place to go for curry in Selly. You can bring your own booze, share a GIANT naan bread between a group of you, and pick from a massive choice of curry dishes. The perfect place for sports teams to go to celebrate after a game.
4. Christmas Markets
You know it’s nearly Christmas when the Birmingham German Markets open. Wrap up warm and enjoy a hot chocolate or glass of mulled wine with your pals while having a good sing along to some festive tunes. The food is great as well. You can get a Nutella crepe for £3.50 or a German Sausage for £4. There’s always a lively atmosphere in the evening, though it can get quite crowded at weekends. Make sure you check it out before it goes on Christmas Eve!
5. The Plough, Harborne
My #1 for tasty pub grub! This place has a cosy atmosphere and serves super nice food. You get a decent sized portion for your money. I opted for the vegan option: a sweet potato and quinoa chilli which was amazing and had a nice spicy kick to it. However, their calzone and burgers are unreal, and I would recommend them too.
Where else should I check out? Let me know your favourite Brum hangouts and I can include them in future blogs!
