Jess says: Help change the national conversation!

I’m Jess, Your Representation and Resources Officer. Each year the Guild sends 21 elected delegates to 9 different NUS conferences around the UK to make sure the voices of University of Birmingham students are heard on a national level. More than 1000 delegates from all around the UK attend NUS national conference each year, making it the biggest democratic student event in the world!

The main function of NUS Conferences is to debate and pass new policy for Student Unions around the UK. As a member of NUS, the Guild sends motions to conferences which be debated, and if passed, affect the whole student movement.

From Brexit to student welfare, to tuition fees and maintenance grants, NUS motions deal with a huge range of topics and seek to improve the lives of students. Want to play a part in shaping the debate? You can help to steer the conversations on the big issues and direct how NUS’s considerable budgets will be spent by submitted motions via Student Voice.

The deadline for submissions for motions at LGBT+, International, Postgraduate and Mature & Part-time student conferences is 27th November, 10am. If you would like to suggest a motion, please email Student Voice with details of your motion. Click here for the Guild’s guidance on how to pass motions at the Guild and send them to NUS, and click here for a handy template. If you are interested in writing a motion and would like some help, or have any questions, please drop into the Student Voice office in the Guild 10am-4pm.
