Hello from your Sports Officer!

Hi I’m Josh, your new Sport Officer!

I am extremely pleased to be representing your voice in sport over the next year. From improving performance and increasing participation, to outreach and helping with campaigns – I’m committed to enhancing the sporting experience for every student at Birmingham.

Sport has played a fundamental role in my life as a student over the past three years. I have played cricket ever since I could walk and decided to bring my passion for cricket to University, which has allowed me to compete against other students from all over the country and introduced me to the pride of representing Birmingham. Being nominated as social sec and first team captain has also given me first-hand experience of the issues that students face in terms of sports night tickets, BUCS admin and general organisation of clubs. The leaves me in a good position to offer guidance and support for your decisions and issues that you may face.

As well as competitive sport, campus leagues and friendly sport have given me the opportunity to meet people and learn new skills. Playing geography netball and football provided a perfect pathway to integrate with my coursemates and gave me more confidence to speak out in lectures and seminars which highlights the direct impact that sport can have on your academic success as well as helping to widen your social circles. No matter what your ability, these sports are available to everyone so if you’re not already I’d definitely recommend getting involved. Whether on your course or just with mates, why not even start your own team?

All in all, my sporting journey throughout university has provided me with countless opportunities to meet friends, make unforgettable memories and has allowed me to settle into a routine which has undoubtedly enhanced my university experience as well as my grades.

Anyway, enough about me… looking ahead to the new academic year I have a number of exciting plans and they’re all focused around you. I want to improve welfare support for club members and encourage exercise across campus to promote positive mental and physical health, increase the number of opportunities available in friendly sport and exercise classes for all groups of students, and integrate sport into events such as the One World Festival.

Finally, we want to make UBSport the most inclusive environment there ever has been so that everyone has their chance to find their sport, showcase their talent and flourish throughout their time at Birmingham. We want to do this by changing the culture so that both our sporting success and participatory programmes can be celebrated to the extent that they deserve. To achieve this we need your help to drive the pride in our sporting achievements so that all BUCS clubs and friendly sports can unite, support and cheer each other on.

I can’t wait for the new term to start and I look forward to seeing you all soon!
