Kris Says: Reporting Housing Issues
Hey everyone, I’m Kris, your Housing and Community Officer.
I hear from lots of people living in Selly Oak who are experiencing problems with their ‘House of Horrors’. These issues range from front doors that are coming off their hinges, to mould building up in their room, to landlords and agents ignoring their emails and calls to get things fixed – the list is endless!
But the bit that bothers me is that as students, many of us feel that there is nothing we can do about it… but this isn’t the case! Here at the Guild we have a service that can make your dream of a liveable house a reality. Guild Advice is our free, impartial legal service that will help you to improve the housing issues that may have been haunting you this year. I urge you to get in touch with Guild Advice to report any housing issues that concern you. Check out our ‘House of Horrors’ video to give you an idea of some of the issues you should look out for.
This year we are doing some intervention work that will help to address the issues that many of us face. Currently, we are working with the Council, Police and Fire Service alongside our Guild Advice department and the Community Wardens to run housing checks for any students experiencing a ‘House of Horrors’. From these checks we can help you provide evidence to your landlord/agent and put steps in place to get your problems fixed.
If you have any comments or suggestions I’d love to hear them – you can get in touch with me directly via my official Facebook Page.
