Whilst the majority of students will be heading home for a much needed break over the next couple of weeks, the work never seems to end for postgrads!
Whether you’re working on your dissertation, doing valuable research or are an undergrad with extended deadlines, it is important that you are able to access the resources you need over the summer and know how the big changes to campus libraries can affect you.
As you may already know, on 5th June at 3pm floors 2-5 of the Main Library will close to allow all the books to be moved over to the New Library, before it opens in mid-August!
In addition, the Law and Education libraries will close at 5pm on 3rd Juneand the Music Library will close on 17th June. The Selly Oak Library will be unaffected. During this time the Main Library will be open from 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday, and from 10am to 3pm on weekends.
During the move, Library Services are putting in place a ‘fetching service’, which will operate from 8am on Monday’s through to 1pm on Friday’s. You’ll be able to check whether the books and journals you need are affected by zone closures through FindIt@Bham, where you’ll be directed to a request form to order your resources. You’ll then get an email when it is ready to pick up.
The ‘fetching service’ operates twice a day but, due to the massive scale of the move, it can take up to 48 hours to locate and fetch some books. Please think ahead and be prepared!
On the plus side, the Library has increased the amount of resources you can take out at a time to 30, as well as increasing the number of materials available online, meaning you can have your own library in your living room!
Having the upper floors closed means that students will be unable to browse specialised reference collections for a short time but they will be able to order them through the ‘fetching service’. In the middle of June, much of the reference material will be relocated to the ground floor – where the Short Loan section currently is – so that you can access them more easily.
The ground floor of the Main Library will be open for study all summer, as well as research rooms in the Cadbury Research Library and spaces across campus. There will also be rooms booked specifically for study in the Guild so there will be no excuses to not hit that word count!
Library Services are working hard to make sure that students have everything they need during the move, if you feel like you need extra help or questions, please just ask the Main Library Manager, Dorothy Vuong, at email@example.com or 0121 414 8598
