There are lots of changes going on at the Guild over summer: Your new Officer Team has started, Joe’s bar is getting a revamp and we’re enjoying getting to know our new student community for 2019/20! Whilst all of this has been going on, your Debating Hall is getting a much needed upgrade. I have been sitting on project meetings as the build has been taking place over the last few weeks and recently took a walk round the site to see how things are coming along.
This is a massive development that has taken countless hours of planning and intensive student consultation to ensure the changes will hugely beneficial to the students who use the space. As well as designing the space to make it fit for the students who currently use it, the refurbishment will also make the space more accessible for new groups of students to enjoy.
The stage is being completely rebuilt to create a much larger performance space to facilitate all sorts of events from theatre productions, musical performances and dance shows.. It will provide much more room on the stage as well as providing space for activities behind the scenes. The stage also has much better accessibility for students with a disability.
A brand new lighting rig is being installed to make your events look beautifully lit and much more professional and a new sound system to improve sound quality and acoustics. A new tech desk is being built to put tech at the forefront of Deb Hall’s functionality. The balcony is being rebuilt in order to make it better suited for its tech requirements to stunning amongst its new surrounding.
The floor is getting a new lease of life and will look tip-top once the project is complete. The concerns of dance groups were listened to as the new floor will no longer have a gloss finish which made using the space for rehearsals a challenge.
The room is being completely repainted to make it a bright and open space for all student groups to use. For productions, black out blinds will be installed to ensure the room is dark and fit for purpose.
The entire room is being refurbished with students needs at its core. Whilst it may still look like a building site now, it promises to dramatically improve the experience of everyone that uses the hall. I will keep you up to date on the build as it goes on!
