Student Group Shout-outs #6... Welcome Edition

Hi everyone,

This is the third and final blog in my series of Welcome themed Student Group Shout-Outs, highlighting some of the amazing work groups did during the Welcome period. But remember it doesn’t end there, as you can still get involved and join a group all year round, it’s never too late!

So, let’s get started…

Graphic advertising Anime & Manga Society's annual welcome quiz.

Anime and Manga Society:

The Anime and Manga Society hosted a taster Anime Quiz Night open to all students (members and non-members) on their society group chat, on Saturday 3rd of October. The quiz was hosted on Kahoot, and participants communicated through text and/or video chat. The event was fun and the society saw a huge turnout, with people - especially freshers - getting to know each other in groups. There was also a large group video chat and a game of Among Us afterwards.

VegSoc:

VegSoc held a pizza night, movie night and created a pen pal scheme, all of which will be repeated potentially next semester. You can view their upcoming events on Facebook.

Economics:

The Economics society set up a Buddy Scheme last year to help integrate and support the different year groups within the society. Each family has a combination of third, second and first years who can all support and advise each other on anything economics or about uni in general. Due to the world we now live in, meeting and getting to know each family could not happen in person so the society found an online escape room where families could join, work together and escape. The entire event was held on Zoom, unlocking clues to discover where in the world they were trapped. It was a difficult escape room but it was great fun and EconSoc hope it gave their families a chance to get to know each other.

Italian Soc:

Italian Soc held a welcome call on Zoom. They also ran an online cooking class, talking their members through how to cook both normal and aubergine meatballs. They also released a video on their Instagram for anyone who wants to cook their very own meatballs!

Bake soc:

Bake Soc’s first bake went really well despite some internet issues - but that’s bound to happen the first time around (the first pancake doesn’t always turn out as round as the others)! They had 25 bakers which was more than they thought they’d get considering it’s a bake-along! But for their second bake they had lots of returnee bakers which was fantastic!

The society's first bake was Millie’s cookies (a la Good Food) and everyone appeared to enjoy making and eating the final baked goods! Each committee member takes turns in leading the bake and the first week it was Bake Soc’s chair, Helena. They talked about Maple Bank’s ovens, mites in flour and the fact that most cookies became one cookie instead of 10! Lots of laughing and baking for all.

The Society and its members have since made brownies which were very fudgy, gooey and gooood! And no one would know they were vegan!

The bakes take place once a fortnight on Wednesdays at 5pm and the sign up is on Facebook the week before each bake.
