Elmi’s blueprint to success

Engineering a better Guild for you

I am a final year engineering student running to be your next RRO. My vision is to have students at the heart of everything the Guild does. Students need a union which supports their activities, personal development and individual needs. If elected, I plan on achieving that through the following key areas:

  • Build a better Guild

Building on the new sport centre and library we are getting on campus next year, I want to expand on what we already have in the Guild and make it bigger, literally and figuratively.

The Guild is one of the oldest buildings on campus and the only one dedicated to students’ extracurricular activities. That is why I believe we need more space for all the amazing work that students do every day.

The Guild also provides opportunities for students to develop and represent themselves, however, currently this is largely limited to the Guild officer team. If elected, I will create more levels of engagement and representation for students to get involved.

  • More resources. Better support

The Guild provides supports to students in a variety of ways. However, with the increasing number of students at the university, the limited resources we have are being overstretched and students will be missing out on what the Guild has to offer.

Therefore, I would like to work on streamlining the different ways people get involved with the Guild, making sure that students always have something to do on campus. Whether that be weekly society meetings, to the big events like Gradball or the direction which the Guild and University are taking as organisations, students should be involved all the way through.

Working on creating a better room booking system for university rooms, initiating different committees students can sit on and securing sponsorships for student activities are just some of the ways I plan on improving student engagement.

  • Ethnic minorities engagement review

Black and ethnic minority student engagement is an issue that has been highlighted throughout the higher education sector and by the national union of students. As a black student myself, I have experienced some of those issues first hand and have seen others struggle through them as well.

Issues such as the lack of spaces for students to get involved, lack of prayer spaces for religious students and even the heavy focus on drinking culture are just a few of the issues ethnic students face. However, there are a wide variety of different issues which I will not be aware of which need to be addressed and can only be highlighted by a comprehensive review into the black and ethnic minority student experience at Birmingham.

Ultimately, I want students to represent themselves as much as possible and to use the resources the Guild has to support students as much as possible. If that is the Guild you want to see, vote Adam Elmi #1 Representation and Resources Officer.
