Caley Routledge

Hi, I’m Caley, and I am running to be your next Activities and Development Officer.

Over the past few years, I've built up a bit of experience that have helped inform my policies:

  • Vice-Chair (2014 – 2015) and Chair (2015 – 2016) of the Debating Society
  • Regional Coordinator for two charities, Debate Mate (2014 – 2015) & The European Youth Parliament UK (2013 – 2014)
  • The Times Research Manager, responsible for running the Final Year Student Survey across campus (surveying over 900 final years)

The policies I have developed so far, from that experience, are all about ensuring that the Guild is working for student groups. That's why I've pledged to ensure that it's possible for all groups to meet with me, so that I know exactly what it is they'd like, rather than simply presuming I already know. Together we can build clear ideas of how to make our groups the best they can be.

There are, however, a few core areas I've already highlighted that I'd like to develop. As soon as I'm elected, I'll be working towards making sure students are able to access groups that suit their needs and interests. More introductory events, and clearer information about those events, will ensure that students are finding their way into groups. A focus on inclusivity will make sure they stick around.

From there, it's crucial that we ensure that all groups have all the resources they need to support their members. Groups are expected to grow, but often don't see the support necessary to facilitate that. Access to resources like training, clearer finances and room bookings will make this growth a lot easier. Groups collaborating with other groups, as well as the University, will spread burdens but also open new opportunities to smaller groups like formal balls and international trips.

There is little reason all of the above and a lot more cannot be achieved, because I’m going to spend a year working for you to make sure that the best happens for our student groups.

Student groups turned me from a new and shy fresher into someone willing to speak and work for 30,000 students. Given the chance, I won’t take that opportunity lightly. Vote Caley for Activities and Development Officer.
