RENT takes place in New York City during the Christmas of 1989, and the following year. The show follows the lives of a group of friends, through the lens of Mark, who documents their lives. The show follows the friends as they deal with issues such as AIDS, poverty, homelessness and drug addiction. The basic plot of the show follows their battle against Benny, who is attempting to evict them in order to develop their apartment block into a digital cyber arts studio. However, the show is much more than that. We see relationships start and end, friends meet, and lives end. This show deals with what it means to be different, and what it means to be human.
