REQUIREMENTS

Essential:

  • Experience of working with children/teenagers
  • Enthusiasm for summer school life 
  • Ability to thrive in a residential setting
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Flexibility, a willingness to work hard and a sense of humour

Desirable:

  • Experience of residential summer schools
  • Proven ability to organise group activities in areas including sports, art, music and drama
  • Experience of working with non-native speakers
  • Recognised qualificaion in sports coaching, lifeguarding, dance instruction etc
  • Current valid First Aid certificate
  • Child protection training

RESPONSIBILITIES

?Activities:

  • Work with activities staff to design, organise and implement activity programme
  • Promote activities by preparing posters/noticeboards
  • Prepare and collect student sign-up sheets 
  • Participate in all activities enthusiastically
  • Encourage all students to participate fully in the activity programme
  • Attend and participate in activity staff meetings

Excursions:

  • Accompany and fully supervise students on excursions
  • Be familiar with excursion destination and itinerary
  • Ensure students have relevant excursion pack
  • Ensure safety of students at all times
  • Ensure students arrive punctually at collection points
  • Attend and participate in pre-excursion briefings

Pastoral:

  • Perform all residential duties punctually and professionally
  • Be aware of your duties as per the weekly timetable
  • Actively supervise mealtimes on a rota basis
  • Undertake wake up duty on a rota basis
  • Undertake night duty on a rota basis
  • Be a role model for the students

Other:

In addition to the above, all staff are required to:

  • Work positively as part of a team
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude
  • Attend and participate in whole staff meetings
  • Act according to accepted professional standards at all times
  • Act in the welfare of the students at all times
  • Comply with centre and BSC rules and regulations

ALs are required to attend a pre-course training day to meet staff from their own and other centres and to be briefed fully on all aspects of working at a BSC summer school. 

CONDITIONS

  • Salary starting from £270 per week depending on qualifications, experience and centre size. Pay scale available on request.
  • All accommodation and board is provided.
  • This post is offered on a residential basis. Working hours may be unsociable due to evening activities, night duty and the times of student arrivals and departures.
  • BSC adopts a smart, casual dress policy. Staff are provided with one BSC polo shirt, one t-shirt and one hoodie. BSC uniform is compulsory on excursion days and special events. BSC lanyards are to be worn at all times.
  • There is at least one full day off per week.
  • All references will be followed up and all gaps in CVs must be explained satisfactorily.
  • Reference requests will ask specifically whether there is any reaosn that they should not be employed in situations where they have responsibility for, or substantial access to, persons under 18.
  • Appropriate Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) or police check is required prior to confirmation of appointment.

Proof of identitiy and qualifications will be required. Only those with the right to work in the UK are eligible for any BSC position.
