Need Help?

We're always happy to help

Whether you are a committee member, a volunteer group member or you’re involved in volunteering in any way, we are here to support you. Look below to see all the resources available to you and some answers to the questions we often get asked.

What is volunteering?

Volunteering is an unpaid activity where someone gives their time to help a not-for-profit organisation or project in the community.

Who can volunteer?

Anyone! Whether you’re an undergraduate, postgraduate, home or international volunteer, there are a wide range of amazing volunteering opportunities to suit everyone.

How do I start volunteering?

You can search for volunteering opportunities via the online volunteering portal here

When you find an opportunity you love either click ‘You need to create your profile’ under ‘Applying’ on the opportunity advertised or click ‘Profile’ at the top of the page and enter your information to get started!

You can also volunteer with student-led groups who campaign, fundraise, raise awareness for a number of causes - you can find the full list here

How much time do I need to give?

Most roles on the volunteering portal and opportunities within student groups are flexible and can fit around your studies. You can check the number of hours per week on advertised volunteering roles or email the student group you’d like to volunteer with.

Do I need any skills or experience?

Most volunteering opportunities only look for enthusiastic and committed volunteers, however any specific qualifications or skills required will be included in the role description.

How much does it cost?

Most volunteering projects cost nothing to take part, however some student-led volunteering groups may have a joining fee to cover running costs. You can find out any membership fees on the groups page here

When do the projects take place?

You can start volunteering throughout the year on a number of projects - you can also search for time commitment on the volunteering portal depending on what works best for you, e.g. weekends, one off projects etc. Please note that most student-led volunteering groups only run during term time.

I have contacted a charity but haven’t yet received an answer - what can I do?

We work with numerous charities who are often very busy, so please do allow a response time of two working weeks. If you still haven’t heard back after this time, please get in touch and we can follow this up for you.

Can I set up my own volunteering project?

Of course! If you have a project in mind please get in touch at volunteering@guild.bham.ac.uk and we’ll help you get started.

How can I get in touch?

You can get in touch by emailing volunteering@guild.bham.ac.uk or calling 0121 251 2411.

You can also visit the Jobs, Skills and Volunteering Office Mon- Fri 10am-4pm during term time or Mon-Fri 12-3pm outside of term time.

You can also follow our Facebook page www.facebook.com/guildvolunteers or on Twitter at @guild_volunteer.
