Thinking of applying for an Officer position? We’re guessing you may have a few questions about which role to apply for and what exactly you’ll be doing as a part of next year’s Officer Team. So we caught up with your current Officers to ask about their responsibilities and what will form a key part of YOUR role if you’re elected - that way you can make an informed decision when it comes to applying!

Here’s what they said:

Joshua, Guild President

Joshua Williams, Guild President

‘As Guild President I act as a key Stakeholder between the Guild and the University, making sure your voice is raised and elevated to every part of the University.

I am also in charge of democracy at the Guild, which involves representing your voices here and making sure you have the ability to change things and make a difference on campus.

Finally, I also lead the Officer Team, ensuring they’ve achieved what they want to achieve and supporting them wherever I can to make sure we all get the best out of year in office.

So , if you’re really interested in democracy and this sounds like the perfect fit for you, why not apply for President.’

Tobi, Postgraduate Officer

Tobi Adeyemi, Postgraduate Officer

‘Within my role I represent all postgrad students at both Guild and university level, to make sure your voices are being heard so that decisions being made are well represented and reflective of the postgraduate perspective.

I also really enjoy creating social events for postgrad students, to make sure that there is a huge amount of engagement within the postgrad community, and to make sure you feel part of the wider community - because you are!

Finally, I’m also working on my own baby project! I’m putting together a Skills Acquisition Project which enables postgrads to learn new skills such as employability and leadership skills.

So if you want to represent your Postgrad community – go for PG Officer

Josh Dooler, Sports Officer

A big part of the job is organising sports events and priority campaigns which can involve working with Hall Reps, societies and liberation groups.

I also represent YOUR voice on campus, to ensure as many students as possible can get involved in sports. This includes sitting in on UoB Sport’s senior management meetings, so I can inform decisions from a student perspective.

Finally, I help to deliver workshops and networking events to sports club members; facilitating discussions of best practice, celebrating achievements and ensuring you’re all supported.’

I am also involved with improving key areas of the education policy, which includes lobbying the University to incorporate changes to make your experience even better.

Finally, I represent your voice at the highest level in university committees such as Senate and the University Education Committee.'

My favourite thing about my role is, representing YOUR voice in regular University meetings, as you can really see your actions driving change on campus.

Leading campaigns on key areas that require attention - this is really fun and allows you to take the lead on issues which matter to students most!

Finally I'm involved in strategic decision-making within the Guild, particularly around student mental health, so I can ensure all students feel supported at University.'

Ryan, Activities and Employability Officer

‘Here’s a few things that I look after and will form a big part of your year in Office:

I’m in charge of organising loads of great Guild events, such as GradBall, Societies Night and Give it a Go Fair, to really help you make the most of university life.

Alongside this, I play a large part in representing the student voice, as I sit on a lot of different University boards which means that YOUR voice is heard at the highest level.

This past year I have also been developing the student groups’ policy, which has been making the student experience within societies even better. I’m so pleased about this, as student groups form such a massive part of university life.’

Jo, International Officer

Jo Park, International Officer

‘Are you thinking of applying for International Officer? Here’s a few things you could be looking after if you’re elected:

One of my big responsibilities is representing all international students on campus. This involves organising cultural events and activities to build and really celebrate our global student community on campus.

I also make sure that students who are studying on a year abroad through an Exchange programme are supported and can access the advice they need at any stage in the Exchange process.

Finally, I’m in charge of representing students studying at international campuses, to ensure their voices are being heard.

I have loved being International Officer for two years, now it’s your turn so get applying.’
