Full Time Officer Team: Guild Opens Study Space During Strike Action

Starting today and running until Wednesday 4th December, University College Union (UCU) members will be striking at 60 universities across the country – including the University of Birmingham.

Staff are striking due to pension changes and pay, equality, casualisation and workloads. We encourage all students on campus to take the time to learn about the dispute and the reasons why staff have gone on strike as industrial action is always a last resort. During this time, teaching will be affected across campus.

As the Guild of Students is based on the edge of campus, the building will be opened up to allow students to independently study. The Guild can be entered via Edgbaston Park road meaning you do not have to cross the picket line to come here and access study space.

As previously stated, we absolutely respect the right of UCU members to take industrial action and we call on the University to take the strike action and the issues raised by UCU members seriously within negotiations. We hope that the Guild can be a safe space for students. Over the strike period, please get in touch with your Officer Team to raise concerns that you may have and we will do our best to protect your interests – both academic and other. As assignments and exam periods are coming up, please be sure to utilise Guild Advice for independent advice and support.

Each day we will be posting via the Guild’s social media channels to let you know which rooms are available. Today's study space availability is as follows:
