Guild Statement: BUCU

It has come to our attention that the Birmingham branch of the University and College Union (BUCU), the trade union for academic and academic-related staff at the University of Birmingham, has released an open letter to all students at the University of Birmingham. The open letter, (read in full here), outlines BUCU’s dissatisfaction with disciplinary proceedings against teaching staff based on module and lecturer ratings and text comments from student Module Evaluation Questionnaires (MEQ).

The Guild of Students is supportive of the use of Module Evaluation Questionnaires, if used appropriately, as they allow students to give feedback on their modules so improvements can be made. The Guild has an agreed code of practice with the University through which we believe student complaints should be directed and can be found here. Students are advised to contact Guild Advice in the Guild of Students for advice and support throughout the process of raising a concern or a complaint.
