The following is the latest update from the Guild of Students which details our current response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. We will continue to update this page with any new information as the situation develops. Please keep checking your University emails and following the University’s regularly updated COVID-19 statement and FAQ’s page for up-to-date information and advice.
Updated 16:57pm, Friday 13th March.
Following the escalation of the UK Government's response to Coronavirus last night, the Guild of Students would like to clarify our current position regarding Guild activity and events.
Along with other Universities, students’ unions and other higher education facilities around the world, the Guild is responding to the evolving situation regarding the Coronavirus outbreak – and making preparation for any potential change in Government policy. As ever, our highest priority is the health and wellbeing of our students and staff and any further action we take will be with this concern most firmly in mind.
We recognise that these are exceptional circumstances – as a result of which we are having to react on a day-to-day basis. We will continue to update students via our website and social media channels as the situation changes.
The University continues to take its lead from the latest advice and guidance from Public Heath England (PHE), the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and UK Government. The University are monitoring this on a daily basis and, on the latest advice, remains open. Where possible we have been advised to conduct activity as normal. The Guild of Students will follow the University in its approach and will act in accordance with a campus-wide response to the outbreak.
However, contingency planning has begun, with consideration of the actions we will take in a number of forecast scenarios.
- Staff & Student Welfare
- Student Activity
- Keeping the Guild running
- Internal & External Communications
Guild of Students Activity & Events (including Student Groups)
As it stands, events and activities are to go ahead as planned – unless the Government advice or University policy changes. We will continue to monitor advice and update plans as required. Moving forward, and subject to advice, the Guild will not cancel any Guild or student group activity / events (in the Guild or University) unless we are advised to do so. Externally hosted events will be subject to the policy of the venue.
Events which are already scheduled will go ahead as planned - unless the Government advice or University policy changes. We will continue to monitor advice and update plans as required.
The event next week on Tuesday 17th March will go ahead. Students attending the event, should follow Government, NHS, and PHE advice.
