The Guild of Students and University of Birmingham unreservedly condemns racist, anti-Semitic & homophobic graffiti found on campus in recent days. We have reported the matter to West Midlands Police and are working with them to identify those involved.
Our University is a community of 150 nations and we are proud to be situated in a vibrant multi-cultural City. Discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated. We are therefore actively working with a range of groups to bring people together and ensure that our University is a place where diversity is celebrated and everyone plays their part in creating a vibrant and welcoming community.
The Guild works hard to ensure that our building is a safe space for all of our members, and we are angry that this has been threatened by the actions of hateful individuals who have no place on our campus. We urge all students to stand with us against these cowardly acts and to offer support to fellow students affected by these incidents.
In the meantime, if you feel unsafe on campus you can contact Guild Advice (a Third Party Hate Crime Reporting Centre) for free and confidential support. The University also operates a Harassment Advice Service and have a number of support and advice services you can talk to. We urge anyone finding further incidences of graffiti on campus to contact the University of Birmingham campus security team via 0121 414 3000. Anyone with information about these incidents should also contact West Midlands Police via 101.
