On Tuesday 13th June, we are hosting the STUDENT GROUPS CONFERENCE.

This day will be packed with a variety of workshops and sessions for new commitee members for 2017-18 that will be running societies, religious groups, volunteering groups and associations. The conference will be a fantastic opportunity to talk to other committee members, get advice from staff and hit the ground running for the new academic year.

It is compulsory that ONE person from each committee needs to attend this day. There may be a space for a second person per group, though this will be confirmed later.

LUNCH IS PROVIDED! [bring your own drinks]

There are 3 core sessions that everyone will go to during the day:

Student Groups: your year ahead: This session will get you thinking about the purpose of student groups and the exciting opportunity you have to put your mark on your society by being on committee.

Student Groups Finance: Want to master the art of budgeting for your year ahead, and find more about the confusing world of student group finance? Then this session will help you get your head around all things finance.

Event Planning: From forming your initial idea to delivering your event, you'll be given lots of tips and guidance to making your event a success.

There are two blocks of optional sessions; in each block you can pick two out of the available sessions (you'll do one, then the other). For the optional sessions there are capacity limits so you'll put down your first, second and third choices and we'll allocate you to the sessions. It's likely that you'll get the ones we want but with so many groups, it's possible that some people might not get their first choice.

Block A optional sessions (you'll do 2 out of 3):

A: Leading a Student Group Effectively: Develop an understanding of the challenges you'll face in office and how to lead your group effectively (100 ppl maximum per session)
A: Campaigning for Change: If you want to change student opinion on an issue that’s important to you, or lobby the university to change its policies, then come along! Training includes how to plan your campaign, frame your argument, organise events and access Campaigns support at the Guild, including Campaign funding. (40ppl max)
A: It's easy being Green!: This session will provide you with lots of ideas around minimising your groups impact on the environment, as well as some brilliant cost-effective ways on how to do things differently whilst saving your members money. (25ppl max)

Block B optional sessions (you'll do 2 out of 4):
B: Marketing & Social Media: An interactive session on the merits and pitfalls of social media use. You'll be given insight into how to use platforms effectively, some tips on interesting content and pointers on how to stay staff and appropriate on social media. (50ppl maximum per session)
B: Membership Engagement: A session on how to understand your group’s demographic make-up and ideas on how you can ensure that your group is more inclusive and representative.
B: Get out there!: Working in the Community: How can you see the impact you are having and measure it in a meaningful way? Discuss how to get the best out of your opportunities when working in the local community.
B: Not on Workshop: Looking at why consent is important and the bystander intervention - how to look after your friends on a night out.

As there are so many committee members, we'll be dividing people up by miniforum into two seperate streams (for example, your group will be doing Block A sessions while people on different miniforums will be doing Block B), so you'll see people from similar groups all day and get ideas or inspiration from them.
