A unique opportunity has arisen for the University. The Birmingham Children’s hospital have invited us to transform 5 art windows in their community gallery. The theme is listening and being heard.

A wise person once said: "You cannot heal what you cannot feel." I wonder if another way of saying this is: We cannot heal until we have been fully heard. All of us want to be listened to. It's a basic human need. Being heard can contribute to our healing in times of trouble or distress because the one thing we all have in common is that we all experience/will experience suffering.

Given that truth, if someone were to listen to you now and heard what was on your heart what would that mean to you? Would you be able to say or show what that means in a picture, a collage, maybe a poem? This project is an invitation to do just that. To spend some time thinking and then drawing, painting, collaging or writing how it would make you feel this be fully heard and understood.

The idea is that using the art materials provided you are invited to fill the shaped tile in any way you choose that would say something about what it would feel like for you to be listened to and fully understood. Once finished, the tiles will all be gathered in to go towards transforming the community gallery in one of the walkways at the Hospital. The result will be five original masterpieces of art expressing the dream of being truly heard. So let the listening begin.
