The life sentencing of Matthew Hedges, a 31 year old Durham University PhD student, has come as a massive shock to our student community. His trial, in which he received no legal representation, has been labelled a ‘miscarriage of justice’. This situation has particularly shaken our student family and fellow institutions with campuses in Dubai and the wider UAE; the University of Birmingham being one of many.
Over the next week, Guild Officers will be meeting with the University to voice the concerns that students have raised. Individual officers have made their views clear regarding Dubai, however, as long as the University of Birmingham chooses to be in Dubai, our role will be to support students and to ensure this never happens again to the student community.
