Socialist Students is a democratic organisation of students fighting for a socialist transformation of society to meet the needs of all, not the profits of a few. We are active in schools, colleges and universities across the UK, seeking to get young people organised in the fight for a future free of war, climate chaos, poverty, racism, sexism, and all the misery that capitalism means for young people’s lives today.
Our members don’t just discuss socialist ideas but are at the forefront of building resistance to all attacks on our futures, through building campaigns and organising protests. We want to link our struggles as students and young people to the struggles of workers both on and off campus, in the common fight for a socialist alternative to capitalism.
Last year, Socialist Students in Birmingham played a significant role in the Birmingham bin strike, including blocking bin lorries when the council used an undemocratic injunction to prevent bin workers themselves conducting normal legitimate picketing. We also stood two of our members as candidates in last year's local elections as part of the Trade Union and Socialist Coalition.
Socialist Students is more than a reading group, we're active in fighting for change. This year, Socialist Students across the country is paying a central role in organising a Europe-wide youth walkout against capitalism and war on November 20th. This has the potential to be a really big international event, but we have to build for it!
Are you a Socialist? Do you want to get involved in a revolutionary movement fighting for a socialist system that puts people and the planet before profit? If so, then come and find out more at our first meeting of the year!
