Do you know someone who’s had a meaningful impact on UoB students? Why not nominate them for an Honorary Lifetime membership for the Guild of Students!

Whether you know someone who’s been an exceptional voice for students or someone who’s contributed to the development and achievements of a student group as a committee member, you can nominate them for this fantastic opportunity which will also be a great addition to their CV!

To be eligible to be nominated for Honorary Life Membership, a student or staff member must meet the following:

  • Is, or has been a student member of the Guild; or is, or has been, a member of staff at the University of Birmingham
  • If a current student, they must be graduating from the University of Birmingham or leaving the University within the same academic year.
  • A student or staff member must not have already received Honorary Lifetime Membership (e.g. received honorary life membership as an Undergraduate student and has then since returned to continue studies at Postgraduate level).

A student or staff member must:

  • Be nominated or nominate themselves for Honorary Life Membership.
  • Provide evidence within the nomination of what they or their nomination should receive membership for, demonstrating meaningful impact on the student experience or have made an invaluable contribution to the Guild of Students. Examples of this include:
    • Led or was part of a meaningful and impactful campaign or project.
    • Being an exceptional voice for students i.e. a Student Rep who has contributed meaningfully to student staff forums and make long lasting change within their school/college.
    • Being an exceptional Society/Association committee member, who has contributed to the development and achievements of the group.
    • Has contributed meaningfully to the local student community during their time i.e. volunteering.
    • Supporting student voice in their role as a staff member i.e. through work with Student Reps to improve the student experience.
    • Made an invaluable contribution to the Guild of Students during their time as student or staff member
  • Your nomination must be no more than 500 words.
  • Your nomination should provide clear examples, demonstrating how this individual has contributed to student life and experience at the University of Birmingham and/or the Guild of Students.
    • Nominees can include attachments such as photos, PDFs or relevant documents or links which they feel support their nomination.
  • The Committee will use the criteria noted above to make decisions on the outcome of all nominations.

Nominations Committee will usually only review honorary or life memberships from the previous academic year. However, historical cases (i.e. nomination for a University of Birmingham student who has since graduated or left university) will also be considered at the discretion of the Committee. This can be from any previous year.

These requests would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and verification of student status would be undertaken with UOB Registry services prior to consideration.

Criteria for Historical Requests:

To be eligible to be nominated for an Honorary Life Membership, a former student must:

  • Be nominated by a current or fellow former student or nominate themselves for honorary life membership.
    Evidence within the nomination of what they or a peer should receive membership for, demonstrating meaningful impact on the student experience.
    • This should be completed by following the same criteria outlined within ‘criteria for Honorary Life Membership’.

To submit your nomination(s), simply complete the online form. It is essential to provide us with a detailed explanation of up to 500 words for your nomination; otherwise, it will not be considered.

  • In the instance that the online form cannot be accessed, or a historical request is being submitted, you can request a copy to be sent to you by contacting Student Voice.

Honorary Lifetime Memberships are a membership type at the Guild of Students, as outlined in Byelaw 2.
