Welcome to the University of Birmingham Public Health Society (PHSoc)! If you’re interested in the bigger picture of healthcare, the factors that shape health beyond the hospital, or how we can create healthier communities and a fairer healthcare system, you’ve found your community.
At PHSoc, our aim is to make public health accessible, engaging and relevant to every medical student, regardless of whether you’re considering a career in public health. We want to explore the issues that sit at the intersection of medicine, society and policy, while helping you understand how the work we do as doctors can have an impact far beyond the individual patient.
Throughout the year, we hope to bring you a diverse programme of engaging speaker events, interactive discussions and practical opportunities, covering topics such as health inequalities, global health, health policy, preventative medicine, epidemiology, humanitarian medicine and the social determinants of health. We also want to explore the less obvious sides of public health — from the role of doctors in advocacy and policy to the ways that culture, environment, economics and education can influence health outcomes.
We’re particularly excited to create events that allow you to hear from professionals working across different areas of public health, including public health doctors, researchers, policymakers, NGOs and clinicians involved in population-level healthcare. We also hope to collaborate with other medical societies throughout the year, creating opportunities to explore public health through different specialties and perspectives.Whether you’re passionate about global health, interested in health inequalities, considering a career in public health, or simply want to understand the wider forces that shape your patients’ lives, there will be something for you.
