We aim to present a comprehensive exploration of one of the most significant and revered landmarks in the Arab world: the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. As one of the oldest and holiest sites in Islam, Al-Aqsa has stood as a symbol of faith, history, and cultural heritage for centuries. Located in the heart of the Old City of Jerusalem, it is not only an architectural marvel but also a site of profound spiritual significance. For Muslims, it is the third holiest site in Islam, after the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. The mosque's name, "Al-Aqsa," meaning "the farthest mosque," refers to the journey of Prophet Muhammad during the Night Journey (Isra and Mi'raj), where he is believed to have traveled from Mecca to Jerusalem before ascending to the heavens.
This initiative is designed to shed light on the rich history, intricate details, and cultural heritage of Al-Aqsa Mosque, which has played a pivotal role in both religious and historical contexts for over 1,400 years. The mosque's foundations date back to the early days of Islam, with the first structure built during the Caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab in the 7th century. Over time, it has undergone various expansions, renovations, and reconstructions under different Islamic dynasties, each adding its own architectural style, contributing to the mosque’s magnificent design. Through this effort, we will delve into over 200 unique aspects of the mosque’s architecture, historical significance, and cultural legacy, exploring its stunning mosaics, intricate calligraphy, grand arches, and the sacred Dome of the Rock—another iconic landmark within the same compound.
Beyond its architectural beauty, Al-Aqsa Mosque has witnessed significant historical events, such as its capture by Crusaders in the 11th century and its eventual reclamation by Muslim forces in the 12th century under Salah ad-Din. The mosque has also been a center for learning, scholarship, and the preservation of Islamic knowledge throughout the centuries. It is a place of worship, reflection, and unity for Muslims from all over the world who pilgrimage to this sacred space, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
Our goal is to offer an in-depth understanding of Al-Aqsa Mosque’s history, heritage, and cultural significance to those who may not be familiar with its profound importance. By highlighting its 200 key aspects, we aim to illustrate how the mosque is not just a religious symbol, but a living testament to centuries of history, struggle, resilience, and the shared heritage of the Arab world and beyond. This project is the result of a meaningful collaboration between the Islamic Arts and Heritage organization and the Friends of Palestine societies, combining their expertise and passion to share the story of this sacred site with the world and to foster a deeper appreciation for its invaluable legacy. Through this initiative, we hope to inspire greater understanding, respect, and appreciation for one of the world’s most significant landmarks.
