Guild Statement: Graffiti in the Guild of Students

As your Officer Team, we were horrified to discover that, in recent days, anti-Semitic, ableist and homophobic graffiti has been found within the Guild of Students building.
We are proud that our university is a diverse community and that we represent a student body made up of members of all races, faiths, nationalities, sexualities, genders and abilities. We stand with Birmingham students in firm opposition to the rhetoric of hate expressed in this graffiti, and against all forms of intolerance and discrimination.

We would like to reassure students that we are doing all we can in response to these incidents, including immediately reporting all cases to both police and campus security and working with them to identify those involved. Further to this, we urge anyone with any information regarding these incidents to come forward.
The Guild works hard to ensure that our building is a safe space for all of our members, and we are angry that this has been threatened by the actions of individuals who have no place on our campus. We urge all students to stand with us against these cowardly acts and to offer support to fellow students affected by these incidents.
If you’ve been affected by these incidents, please do not hesitate to use our Guild Advice or Student Mentors services, or visit the University Student Support Services in the Aston Webb Hub. We urge anyone finding further incidences of graffiti on campus to contact the University of Birmingham campus security team via 0121 414 3000 or West Midlands Police via 101.
Guild of Students Full Time Officer Team, 2016-17.
