The Guild President received a petition calling for a referendum on the Guild’s affiliation to NUS (UK) on 30th January 2026. Signatures of the petition were verified, and it was confirmed that the required number of currently registered students to trigger a referendum (698) had signed the petition. On 15th May 2026, the Guild Officer Group decided via an online vote to hold the Referendum in week commencing 8th June 2026.
The Referendum question will be: Should the University of Birmingham Guild of Students disaffiliate from the National Union of Students (UK).
The timeline for the referendum will be:
Campaign Team Meetings: 2nd June, 4-6pm, Rosa Parks
Voting opens: Monday 8th June, 10am
Voting closes: Friday 12th June, 4pm
Provisional Results: week commencing 22nd June 2026
Students who wish to sign up for a Campaign Team can do so here. Campaign Team briefings will be held on the 2nd June, and information will be shared on the Guild website. Campaign Teams will be able to choose their Campaign Team Leaders as well as understand more about the process.
