How to make the most out of Welcome
Welcome is jam-packed with lots of events for anyone! Whether that’s with your flatmates, friends or individually to meet people and make friends, get the most out of welcome at university!
Events Available:
If you have just moved into your student accommodation, there will be pizza parties in a range of different accommodations! Your accommodation will be throwing all sorts of events for students living in accommodation, completely free of charge! Just bring your student ID.
There will also be a range of events on campus, like the Welcome Fair where you can get free goodies, Society Fairs where you can chat to committee members about joining and attending their events! View all the Welcome events on offer at the Guild.
There will be plenty of societies doing taster sessions, where you can meet new people and see if it’s a right fit for you! View the list of societies you may be interested in and where you can buy your membership.
Tips for making friends:
Making friends when you don’t know anyone can be a little daunting but remember that everyone is in the same boat as you! A good tip for making friends is just putting yourself out there and getting involved as much as possible! Lots of people join a society or new sport that they have never tried before, stepping out of their comfort zones and end up loving it as well as making lots of new friends!
There will be freshers group chats made prior to University, where you can find your flatmates and course mates. The app ‘Unibuddy’ is a great place for this, as well as Facebook and WhatsApp group chats.
Seeing Birmingham
Alongside the campus, there is lots to do in Birmingham! Birmingham New Street is a 10-minute train ride away from the University Station where you can shop for hours in the Bullring and city centre. There are lots of small businesses, vintage shops and family-owned restaurants in China town and Digbeth, which are a 10-minute walk from Birmingham New Street station as well. For a change of scenery, Winterbourne House and Gardens is a 10-minute walk away from campus, which is free for all UoB students. Stroll around the botanical gardens and have a coffee and sweet treat with your friends!
Having fun before your course work starts:
What makes this period of time special is the freedom it offers! With coursework yet to begin, there’s time to explore, socialise and settle into a new routine without the pressure of uni deadlines. This is a great time to take advantage of social events, like flat dinners, movie nights and pub quizzes. These events provide a welcome break from worrying about academics and can help create a sense of community.
