Did you know that here at the Guild of Students we have over 350 societies (or student groups) that you can join? Societies aren’t just for undergraduate students so if you’re a Postgraduate student looking to bond with others over a shared hobby, network with your peers or learn a new skill then you’re bound to find a student group for you!

Welcome is the perfect time to join a new society, and we’d highly recommend coming along to our Societies Fair and chatting to different student groups – who knows, you might be inspired to try something new? You can also take a look at our website to view all of our student groups (including MedSoc) and see which ones you might want to join in September!

We also have the newly formed, Postgraduate Community which is a great space for both PGT and PGR students to connect in a welcoming space and join in with regular socials and fun activities.

Here is what the current members have to say about the Postgraduate Community:

Rituraj said: “Honestly, joining the Postgraduate Community was the best decision I made. Coming in, I was incredibly nervous about balancing an intense master's workload with a social life. But stepping out of my comfort zone completely paid off.

Through the society, I didn’t just make lifelong friends who truly understand the unique pressures of postgrad life; I also unlocked amazing networking opportunities that have opened professional doors. Don't let the nerves hold you back—we’re a welcoming bunch, and it’s the perfect escape from your thesis!”

Sagar said: “As a postgraduate student, joining a society has been one of the best ways to feel connected beyond my academic work. Starting a new course can feel overwhelming, and I was initially nervous about meeting new people, but attending society events helped me build friendships and feel part of a wider community.

Through the Postgraduate Community and other student groups, I have met people from different backgrounds and expanded my professional network. One particularly valuable connection was meeting a fellow MSc student who shares my passion for sustainability. We are now exploring the possibility of launching a waste recycling initiative together, showing how societies can open doors to meaningful collaborations and positive impact.”

Devanand said: “When I first arrived in Birmingham, I never expected joining the Postgraduate Community to become such an important part of my university experience. As a committee member, I’ve had the opportunity to help organise events and meet students from all over the world. It’s been amazing to see people make new friends, build confidence, and feel part of a community beyond their course. For me, societies are about much more than attending events, they’re about finding people who make a new place feel like home. I’d encourage every new postgraduate to get involved and give it a try.”

Whether you’re interested in joining the Postgraduate Community or another of our 350+ student groups, head to our Societies Fair during Welcome to meet lots of different student groups and find the group for you!
