Navigating Uni as a Care Leaver: My Story and Top Tips
Having spent 14 years in the care system, I know firsthand how intimidating the jump to higher education can be and the barriers I’ve had to face. When I first stepped onto campus in late September 2023, only 52 care leavers across the UK were accepted into Russell Group universities in my year group. Just 52.
I remember sitting there on my very first day, totally alone, battling a massive wave of imposter syndrome. I was terrified of the stigmas and stereotypes that often come with being care experienced. People love to assume that coming from care limits your independence and opportunities but let me tell you right now: that couldn't be further from the truth.
Fast forward to today, and I’m proud to stand as proof of what we can achieve: I became the first-ever care leaver to be re-elected to serve two terms as a Guild Officer.
How Uni Support Changed the Game for Me
Here at Birmingham, I’ve seen what happens when an institution backs its care-experienced students. While there’s always more work to be done, the support I found here genuinely transformed my journey.
University funding helped send me around the world for debating competitions such as to Copenhagen in 2025. The skills and confidence I built along the way even led to my election as Deputy Equity Officer on the European Universities Debating Council!
I also worked as a Student Ambassador during my first two years, helping run the exact same summer schools I attended back when I was a prospective student.

Get Involved: Finding Your People on Campus
If I could give you just one practical piece of advice, it’s this: jump into campus life.
Joining a club or sports team feels daunting when you don't know anyone, but it is hands-down the best way to build your community and boost your confidence.
There are over 350 incredible student groups at the Guild. I joined the Debating Society, Sober Socials, and the Christian Union and I also joined Tennis.
Keep an eye out for ways to build your CV and try new things:
- Become a Student Rep or run for an elected student role.
- Jump into UoB Xtra, The Birmingham Project, or The Birmingham Award.
- As a Birmingham Scholar, you get tailored academic guidance and funded opportunities to go abroad over the summer.
- Look out for additional pathways like the College of Arts and Law Research Summer Internships.
