Join us for a Q&A style panel event around the theme of LGBTQ+ in STEM day! There will be opportunities to hear from LGBTQ+ professionals about their experiences and whatever topics you would like to ask about! There will also be time for networking with our speakers and each other, including free snacks! You wouldn't want to miss it.

Our speakers for the event:

1. Dr Luciano Rila (he/him) - Senior Teaching Fellow, Department of Mathematics

  • Luciano Rila is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at UCL and the co-founder of the LGBTQ+ STEM @UCL Network, a student-staff partnership that celebrates all things LGBTQ+.

2. Dr Emma Waters (she/they) - Senior Researcher, Microbiologist

  • Emma Waters, with a background in Chemistry and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of East Anglia, is now a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at the Quadram Institute and identifies as bi/pansexual. She is passionate about bridging scientific disciplines and currently investigates the ability of bacteria to rearrange the order of their DNA, which contains instructions on how the bacteria perform tasks to survive.

3. Dr Mario Toubes-Rodrigo (he/him) - Applications Leader, Multiple fields

  • Mario Toubes-Rodrigo is currently the Global Applications Leader at H.E.L in Hemel Hempstead. He followed an interesting path, moving from Biotechnology to Environmental Microbiology, to Astrobiology, and finally to Science Communication. He is an openly cis gay man who has always aimed to create a more inclusive workspace. Apart from doing science and science communication, Mario can be found playing videogames, DnD, or playing uncommon musical instruments.

4. Fiona Connor (she/her) - Senior Geotechnical Design Engineer 

  • Fiona is a Geotechnical Design Engineer working in ground engineering, a sector that covers a wide variety of STEM fields. She is dedicated to ensuring the ground engineering sector is inclusive and diverse.
