Spending the holidays away from home can feel strange at first, especially if it’s your first Christmas in the UK. But it can also be a wonderful opportunity to create new memories, explore local traditions, and connect with people who are in the same boat. If you’re staying on campus or in your UK accommodation this festive season, here are a few ways to make it a meaningful and enjoyable time.

Create your own traditions

Christmas doesn’t have to look the same everywhere you go. Bring a piece of home into your celebrations — cook a favourite dish, decorate your space, or share your cultural traditions with friends. You might even blend your customs with British ones, like enjoying mince pies or watching a Christmas movie.

Connect with other students

You won’t be the only one staying around during the break. Reach out to classmates, flatmates, or neighbours and plan simple get-togethers: a potluck dinner, a game night, a walk to see Christmas lights, or a study-free afternoon with hot chocolate. These small moments often lead to the best friendships.

Explore your city during the holidays

Many UK cities and towns come alive in December with festive markets, light trails, and seasonal events. It’s a great chance to discover new places at a slower pace, and often with fewer crowds once term ends.

Stay connected with home

Set aside time for video calls, messages, or shared online activities with family and friends. A little connection can go a long way when you’re missing home comforts.

Look after yourself

The winter break is also a time to rest. Catch up on sleep, take walks, treat yourself to good food, and give yourself permission to slow down.

Being away from home during the holidays isn’t always easy, but it can be a time of growth, connection, and unexpected joy. However, you choose to spend it, make space for new experiences — you might find that some of them become your own future traditions.
