How Decisions Work
The Guild is run by students, for students. Decisions are made by our Officers, committees, academic representatives – and by you. That means at every single stage, Birmingham students can make a change to what we do, how we do it, and who represents you.
All Student Meeting
Any student can come to our All Student Meeting, which usually happens 3 times during each academic year. Our All Student Meeting considers the big issues that matter to all students on campus.
If there’s a really big issue that our All Student Meeting can’t make a decision on, every student will have a chance to shape our decision by an All Student Vote.
The Guild and its Officer Team are accountable to the members of the Students’ Union. Our members are you, the students at the University of Birmingham. We are responsible to you for our actions and all that we do.
You can get in touch with your Officers at any time to talk about the work they do and how they represent you.
The Scrutiny Panel is made up of 5 University of Birmingham students who hold all Guild Officers to account on their role, manifesto promises and policy.
They meet four times a year, and receive reports written by the Officers in advance of the meetings. From this report, the Scrutiny Panel members ask Officers about their progress to hold them account on your behalf.
You'll be able to find all of the Officer Reports, Scrutiny Panel minutes and Panel Feedback, on our Scrutiny Panel page.
There are four committees covering the big areas of Birmingham life: Activities, Education, Campaigns and Welfare & Liberation. They are made up of students, elected by you, who collaborate on key issues in their areas of expertise and support the work of your Officer Team. Find out more here
Each Committee receives an annual budget from the Guild to support student projects, as well as full training and staff support.
Sharing your ideas
If you’ve got an Idea to improve or change the Guild, we want to hear about it. Submit your idea here and it’ll be submitted to the relevant Guild committee.
Once you make a decision, the project or idea is passed to your Officer Team to get started on making change. You can find out more about the progress on current ideas, here.
This is your chance to become part of one of the Guild Committees or the Guild Officer team! You’ll be able to meet some great new people, build networks and develop a portfolio of skills which will benefit you throughout your time at Birmingham and beyond. Find out more here.
