The guild of students has a rich history of music, having previously hosted legendary artists like Pink Floyd, Joy Division, and Black Sabbath.
However, for many years, music on campus has been relegated only to classical and ambisonic work in the Bramall building. Multiple spaces inside of the guild are available for hire for events, but without a focus on bringing musicians in, this hire cost is offputting to many compared to venues in areas like Selly Oak and Digbeth, leading to them being chosen instead of spaces right on campus. Other universities across the country, such as Leeds Beckett and Liverpool's Mountford Hall, have seen great success with hosting concerts for a number of major artists, which not only creates a more lively and vibrant student community, but brings in many outside visitors too, meaning a great night of earnings for Joes!
With the recent spotlight on Birmingham as the birthplace of heavy metal, and the history of venues like the Deb Hall, there's no better time to revive the music scene at the university!
Begin actively seeking out artists who may be interested in performing at the guild, initially focusing on student societies, such as the Live Music Society and the Rock and Metal society, or independent Birmingham based music promoters.
Hire fees should be reduced (or waived) in any way possible, particularly for externally advertised live music events, as this will be the best way to raise the profile and popularity of the guild.
If possible, a stage backline (basic drum kit, guitar/bass amps, etc) should be made available, making music events far easier to host.
Minimally, the guild should commit to at least 2-3 trial events to gague popularity and logistics.
Ideally, a Live Music Officer would be implemented alongside the current events officer, with a focus on music events in the guild, and liaising with the music department and any relevant guilds.
