Guild Memberships

External Membership Terms and Conditions

External Members of the Guild of Students are entitled to the following privileges: 

  • To make use of any services and facilities of the Guild (such as Joes Bar, Club Nights and other Guild events) in the same way as a Full Member.
  • To hold ordinary membership of any Guild Student Group (subject to additional fees set by the society for the purchase of group membership).
  • To attend meetings and events held by the Guild as a member (but not take part in a formal vote). 

In addition to the normal Guild rules and regulations, we expect all our members to abide by (including the Membership Disciplinary Procedure), there are additional conditions that apply to External Members of the Guild of Students: 

  • External Members are not allowed to hold office/ a committee position within the Guild of Students, or its affiliated student groups (including MedSoc)
  • External Members are not allowed to vote in any Guild Officer elections or student group elections, or stand for office in any Guild election process.
  • External Members are not allowed to take part in the Guild’s Members Democratic Process (see Bye-Law 5) in any way, including the submission of Ideas to the All Student Meeting, or take an formal role in campaigning in, or voting in, a referendum or preferendum held by the Guild.
  • External Members should not usually take leading roles in the Guild’s media productions and performance or media groups, including performances in theatre and music productions, or hosting/ authoring content for Guild TV, Redbrick or Burn FM. 
  • In the event of an allegation of serious misconduct against an External Member, prior to being considered under the Membership Discipline and Appeals policy, the allegation will be reviewed by the CEO or their nominee, and if appropriate their External Membership may be revoked

External Membership is available subject to satisfactory application for External Membership. External Membership at the Guild is granted at the discretion of the CEO or nominee and is non-transferrable between individuals. The Guild of Students reserves the right to refuse External Membership, and to revoke an individual’s external membership at any time. Any fees paid for External Membership are chargeable at the discretion of the Guild as per Bye-Law 2 ‘Membership’ and may change over time. Refunds requested for External Membership fees within 30 days of payment will be granted. External Membership is only available to individuals over 18 years of age.

External memberships will expire on 31st July at the end of the academic year that the membership was granted on. External members will then need to resubmit their application for the following academic year. 

Personal Data shared will be used to verify that your application is valid and to keep a record of an individual’s status as an External Member and to contact them if necessary. Personal data relating to your application for External Membership will be stored securely in line with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and will be used to process and record External Membership and to contact applicants as required. Data from successful External Membership applications will be held within the Guild’s data management system (guildofstudents.com) for a period of 8 years from the lapsing of membership, in line with the Guild’s privacy notice

The Guild of Students’ reserves the right to change these Terms and Conditions at any time without prior notice.
